Silves Cathedral (Sé de Silves)

Histórico e cultural

Silves Cathedral (Sé de Silves), dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, is one of the Algarve's primary religious landmarks. Built on the site of a former mosque, this Gothic cathedral blends centuries of faith and history in red sandstone.

Built in the 13th century over the foundations of the town's main Moorish mosque and restored after the 1755 earthquake, the cathedral showcases a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles. Classified as a National Monument, its red sandstone structure features a striking Gothic doorway and historic tombs, including the original burial site of King Dom João II.

Tourist visits require a low-cost entry ticket, with opening hours running from Monday to Saturday. As an active parish church, it maintains regular religious services and masses on weekends and religious holidays.
