Destinations

Silves invites you on a journey back in time to the ancient capital of the Algarve's Andalusian past. Dominated by its imposing red-stone castle, this city breathes history, culture, and tradition along the banks of the serene Arade River.

Silves is one of the most historically rich and fascinating destinations in the entire Algarve. Located in the Algarve's countryside, yet inextricably linked to the sea through the Arade River — once a navigable trade route —, the city was the magnificent capital of the Moorish kingdom of the Algarve. This glorious heritage is visible from afar, crowned by the magnificent Silves Castle. Built in red sandstone (the local stone known as "grés de Silves"), it is the largest and best-preserved castle in the region, offering superb panoramic views over the city and the surrounding valleys.

Descending the hills from the castle, the steep, medieval alleys lead us to the Cathedral, built over a former mosque, and to the iconic Old Bridge over the river. The city's atmosphere is peaceful and authentic, gaining a special energy in the summer with its famous Medieval Fair, which recreates the times when Moors and Christians shared the city.

Beyond the weight of history, the municipality is famous for its agricultural production, being considered the orange capital of the Algarve, a result of the fertility of its land. Silves is the perfect refuge for those looking to uncover the secrets of the region's past, go hiking in nature, or enjoy robust mountain gastronomy and excellent local wines.
