Silves Castle

Histórico e cultural

Silves Castle is the largest and best-preserved Islamic fortress in Portugal. Guarded by the bronze statue of King Dom Sancho I, this impressive red sandstone stronghold bears witness to centuries of Moorish and Christian history in the Algarve.

Perched atop the hill, the castle stands out for its red sandstone walls and its legacy as the capital of the Moorish kingdom of Xelb. It served as a vital military stronghold fiercely fought over during the Reconquista, changing hands between Muslims and Christians until its final Portuguese consolidation in the 13th century.

Visiting requires a low-cost admission ticket and offers access to walk along the ramparts, towers, and underground cisterns with sweeping views over the town and Arade River. Right at the main gate, a statue of King Dom Sancho I marks the first Christian conquest of the fortress.
