Aljezur Castle

Histórico e cultural

Perched atop a hill overlooking the town and valley, Aljezur Castle is a 10th-century Moorish fortress. Though now in ruins, it offers rich historical heritage, romantic local legends, and spectacular panoramic vistas over the region.

Built by Moorish forces in the 10th century to protect the former river port, this ruined military fortress played a pivotal role in the Christian Reconquest of the Algarve when it was taken in 1249 under D. Paio Peres Correia. Local folklore surrounds the capture with the legend of Maira, a Moorish maiden who reportedly aided the Christians for love. Notably, this historic stronghold is one of the seven castles featured on Portugal's national flag.

Access to the castle ruins is free, offering visitors sweeping 360-degree views across the whitewashed town, the surrounding countryside, and the Monchique hills. As the site features exposed stonework and uneven terrain, wearing sturdy walking shoes and taking care along the curtain wall is advised. Visitors can reach the summit via a steep walk from the historic center or drive directly to the parking area near the entrance.
