World-renowned for its dramatic 226 Km of cliffside scenery in the Vicentina Coast Natural Park, the Fishermen's Trail is a top coastal route. It offers ocean views, wild beaches, and pure nature connecting Alentejo and the Algarve.
Internationally acclaimed, this trail winds through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, traditionally divided into 13 daily stages (ranging between 10 and 20 km) with overnight stops in between. Advanced hikers often combine two stages into a single day. The route follows dramatic coastal cliffs, protected habitats, and traditional fishing harbors, directly benefiting the local hospitality and culinary economies.
The stony, uneven terrain with frequent climbs and descents demands proper hiking footwear, and special care is needed when traveling with children near steep drop-offs. Short sections of 2 to 3 km (such as around Sagres) can easily be done just to admire the scenery. Since long stretches lack services or civil amenities, carrying adequate water and supplies is essential.
