Considered one of the top activities in the Algarve, dolphin watching in the region (especially in the Western Algarve) allows you to spot several wild dolphin species, with the occasional lucky chance to see other fascinating marine life.
The Western Algarve coast stands out as the premier area for observing dolphins in their natural habitat, with common and bottlenose dolphins frequently sighted, alongside occasional visits from other marine species. To take on this adventure, there are mainly two types of vessels: large-capacity boats, which are ideal and more comfortable for families with young children, and rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), perfect for teenagers and adults seeking higher adrenaline and closeness to the water.
On RIBs, passengers sit much closer to the waterline, allowing for an exceptionally close approach to the animals — sometimes feeling almost within touching distance. However, due to the high-speed maneuvers and bumpy waves, these boats are strictly unsuitable for individuals with back problems, reduced mobility, or pregnant women. Bringing a windproof jacket, sunglasses, and sunscreen is recommended regardless of the vessel chosen.
