Faro

Destinations

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, surprises with its rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Discover the beauty of the walled 'Vila Adentro' and explore the channels and deserted islands of the stunning Ria Formosa.

As the district capital and the main gateway to the region through its international airport, Faro is a city that pulses with a unique energy, combining urban sophistication with deep historical pride. The heart of the old town, known as "Vila Adentro," is accessible through the monumental Arco da Vila. Inside, time seems to slow down among cobbled alleys, squares lined with orange trees, and centuries-old buildings, culminating in the imposing Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace.

Faro enjoys a privileged location stretching along the shores of the Ria Formosa. This spectacular coastal lagoon, elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, shapes the city's identity. From the Portas do Mar pier, boats depart to cross the lagoon's channels toward paradisiacal and almost untouched barrier islands, such as Culatra Island, Farol Island, or the deserted Faro Island, the latter connected to the mainland by a road bridge.

Being a university town, Faro also enjoys a dynamic cultural and nightlife scene throughout the year. The famous Rua de Santo António is the central axis for local commerce and socializing. Combining a rich gastronomy based on seafood from the lagoon, history, and nature, the Algarve capital stands as a complete and authentic destination.
