Classified as a National Monument, this Lagos church hides one of Portugal’s finest golden Baroque interiors. A paid monument of immense artistic value, visited through the municipal museum entrance. An absolute must-see in the Algarve.

The Santo António Church is a stunning National Monument in Lagos, requiring a paid joint ticket with the municipal museum. Originally built in the 18th century, its original function was to serve as a house of worship and military chapel for the Lagos Infantry Regiment, who claimed Saint Anthony as their patron. Holding immense historical and artistic value, the interior miraculously survived the 1755 earthquake.

It is globally renowned for its breathtaking, exuberant Baroque gilded woodwork (talha dourada) and 18th-century tile panels, making it a masterpiece of Portuguese art.
