The municipality of Silves is considered the largest citrus production area of Portugal, has a large cork industry and due to a small coastline of ~3km, tourism is not of great economic influence.
The city dates back to 1000 BC and has always been of commercial interest due to its relevance agricula and forestry industry. Through these lands passed the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, was a Roman stronghold, but it was the Moors who really made it a thriving city.
The Moorish fortification suffered several invading hordes by Portuguese Christians supported by Crusaders from throughout Europe, and was besieged for years before falling.
The castle and cathedral are worth a visit but the whole city is living history.
